Gemstones of the Zodiac - Part 12 - Jade

Welcome to Part 12 of our “Gemstones of the Zodiac” series.

The twelfth sign of the Zodiac is Pisces (February 19 - March 20).  The Mystical Zodiac stone for Pisces is Jade.

History/Mythology

Jade is one of the oldest known stones, and history shows that it was mined as early as 6000 B.C.  In China, it was considered “The Imperial Gem”, as it was used for burial suits and grave furnishings for kings and other members of imperial families.  Jade cicadas were also placed on the tongue of the deceased, as it was believed this would prevent decomposition and help guard the chi of the deceased. 

It was carved into many figurines and other objects, and was as revered in China at that time as we revere gold and diamonds here today.  To the ancient Chinese, gold was valuable, but jade was invaluable.

A Chinese dictionary from 200 A.D. defines jade as being endowed with five virtues: charity, rectitude, wisdom, courage and equity. 

Starting in the late stages of the Tang Dynasty, and going into the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the 16th Century, the stone was only being used for objets d’art, and was no longer used ceremoniously.

Taoist alchemists believed it to the the Philosopher’s Stone, and would grind it into powder and use it in elixirs and potions to help guard against illness and evil spirits.

Many Chinese believe that a piece of jade, when worn, will turn darker in color if it likes the wearer.  This change in color was said to be the stone leeching the bad chi out of the wearer.  It is often given as a present to a newborn, so they can wear it to ward off bad luck.

In addition to the Chinese culture, jade was also important to the Maori culture in New Zealand.  They consider it a treasure and closely monitor its usage, to avoid exploitation.  The Maori used it to make tools, weapons and ornaments.  It was often gifted as a way to seal an agreement, much as we would shake hands today.

Jade Types and Colors

In its most pure, jade is actually white.  The colors of jade are dependent on the impurities and other elements present in the jade (such as sodium, magnesium, iron, etc).

 Unlike most of the other stones we have dealt with in this series, there are actually two different stones that use the “jade” name.  One is nephrite jade, and the other is jadeite.

Nephrite jade is much more common, and is the dark green jade that most of us are used to seeing.

Jadeite is much rarer, and the translucent form of it is what was known as Imperial Jade. 

Other colors of jade include gray, blue-green, lavender, yellow, orange, brown, reddish-brown, and even black.


How To Tell If It Is Real Jade

Because there are plenty of stones that look like jade, or can be dyed to look like jade (such as aventurine, serpentine, calcite, and even certain types of garnet), you may not be able to tell just by looking whether it is real jade or not.

Several recommended tests for real jade include:

1. Hold it up to the light.  Real jade will have fibrous strands running through it.  If you see a clear stone, or even bubbles, it is not real jade.

2. Hold it in your hand.  It should start of feeling very cool.  Clasp it tightly until it has warmed up to your own body temperature.  Once it has reached that temperature, place it back down.  After 30 seconds, pick it back up.  If it is cool again, it is real jade.  Real jade does not retain heat.

3. You can run your fingernail over the edges of the stone.  If your nail is catching on scratches or other flaws, it is not real jade.  Real jade is smooth.

4. Lightly tap two pieces together.  If you hear a chime like tone, they are real.  Fakes will sound more plastic, or more like marbles hitting each other.

Jade Properties

Jade is a symbol of serenity and purity, of a nurturing love, of a tranquil wisdom.

It is a protective stone, believed to bring harmony and good luck, and ward off evil.  It clears the mind, releases the negative thoughts.  It is looked at as a “dream stone”, and can bring insightful dreams.  By clearing the negative and allowing more insight, it helps you to become who you really are.  To use it as a dream stone, put a piece of it under your pillow, or inside your pillow case before you go to sleep.  It is thought that, if you keep a piece of jade in your “change bowl” it will help attract abundance.

Jade is believed to help remove toxins (as described earlier, in the belief that it gets darker with wear because it is drawing out the bad chi).  It is thought to assist with healing wounds, and kidney, liver, and other organ issues. 

For good health and good luck, jade is your go-to piece.

This was the 12th and final installment in the “Gemstones of the Zodiac” series.  I cannot believe it has been a year already, and I am very happy to hear that this series has been popular and well-received.

I am also happy to announce that because the series has generated so much interest, we will be continuing it, albeit in a slightly different format, in the future.

Starting in April, we will be featuring other stones that were not part of this specific series.  As we discuss other stones in the future, we will also continue to talk about their histories, their healing properties, and any zodiacal and other mystic connections that they might have.  The new series will just be a bit more “free form” and not necessarily tied to the month in question.

I look forward to continuing this series in its new format, and I am ever grateful to you all for enjoying it enough to ask that it continue.

Mind Body Spirit Artist Series - Amanda Clark

Fairytale enchantment - uplifting, dreamy and mystical illustrations that draw you further and further inside every time you look.  That's what the beautiful artwork by UK artist and book illustrator Amanda Clark does to me every time I see it.  I hope you will enjoy reading about Amanda and her work as much as I did interviewing her!

Chalice Well

Question 1: Tell us a little bit about yourself.  How did you get started in art?

Amanda:   I always remember drawing and painting as a little girl and spending hours colouring in detail and pattern and drawing make believe characters, part human and part animal. Quite shaman like really now I think of it.  My family are all creative people whether the creativity is art, writing, story telling or music and textiles and our family home was a colourful affair and my room especially  full of creative mess, as I like to call it.  We are all nature lovers and love going for walks through woodlands and the English countryside gathering inspirations from the colours of the seasons and the change in the sky and clouds. I remember how I used to feel just being in different places, like walking through poppy and barley fields with the breeze making the waves in the grasses or heavy storm clouds coming towards us over the hills.  I have two lovely children of my own now and can share all of these wonders with them.

Apart from the teachings of my family, and the odd art course as a teenager.  I am mostly self taught in art and illustration, and many crafts.  The art and illustration I have as my income and has been for many years now.  The crafts I still have as a hobby if I have the time.  

MBS: That is quite a jump - from being a self taught artist to becoming an illustrator that is published throughout the UK.  How did that process occur?

Amanda:  Robin Clark, one of my brothers, is a writer and Homoeopath.  When he moved to Australia from our home in England about twenty years ago, he started writing a book he titled 'Voyager'. On a visit back to England one year, Robin saw the kind of art I was painting and it seemed as if we had been living parallel lives with all kinds of 'spiritual teachings'. So he asked if I would like to illustrate his book and he gave me free rein to paint what I felt would go well with his words.  Some years later, Robin has written four books and I have illustrated them all. I still live in the U.K in a lovely country village called Shalford and Robin is now in Perth, Australia and sells these books world wide.

I currently illustrate for my own greeting cards to sell and I have a few ideas for my own 'Fairytale and Folklore' books. People that have collected my art and illustrations have asked about an 'Oracle Card Pack'. Well, I think I will have to find a publisher first.  For the last four years, I have illustrated for a wonderful Pagan diary called 'Earth Pathways Diary' along with other artists, writers, poets and all manner of creative souls.

MBS:  That's wonderful - and your book covers are gorgeous!  Thanks for sharing the links. 
Your work is such an enchanting, quiet reflection of the magical, mystical aspect of nature.
How do the ideas for your work come to you? Where does your inspiration come from?

Amanda: I've always loved fairy tales, especially the old European kind, and after reading these tales many of them seem to be shaman in nature. The characters from the fairytale 'East of the Sun, West of the Moon' for instance. The white bear is a prince and needed the love of a girl to rescue him so he could be human again and the spell broken. - 'Shape Shifting'. In another part of the story, the girl was flying on the back of the wind from the four directions.  There is so much magic in these kind of stories and they can symbolize teachings in our own lives in some way. I don't know if other people see the things that I do in fairy tales but this is a great inspiration for my art.  A quote from 'Einstein' is; If you want you children to be intelligent read them fairy tales. If you want your children to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.   I believe fairy tales can be very healing.

So with fairy tales, myths and shaman ways being part of my inspirations, I have the English countryside too. Very early in the warmer seasons, I go for dawn walks in the mossy woodlands or gentle hills close to my cottage. This part of the day has it's own kind of magic and enchantment.
When everyone else is sleeping, all you hear are the sounds of the birds  creating the 'dawn chorus' and sometimes the land is covered in ribbons of mist and dabbled sunlight shining through the trees. The wildlife is easy to see, with hares, deer and sometimes a fox. Here  I can feel the energy of my totem animals.  Morning dew making the cobwebs glow. Walking bare foot on the grass. Delicate wild flowers moving gently in the breeze.   This is when I feel the most connected with our Earth and she takes my breath away with her beauty. I find a place to sit quietly while watching the sunrise.  For me, this is where the mystical aspect of nature lies and is a constant source of inspiration for my paintings.

MBS:  How do you make your paintings and illustrations?  What materials do you use, what size do you work in, etc?

Amanda:  I paint on artist's board, canvas or thick watercolour paper and card using acrylics, watercolour pencils, and sometimes mica for a little natural sparkle.

I have painted directly onto wood and even furniture.  When I paint illustrations, I keep them size small, usually no larger than 12x 16". Some of the original paintings I have as larger canvases and I exhibit these unframed.   When my children were small, I painted their rooms with sky, clouds and moon to go with the sweet, dreamlike animals and trees.

MBS:  Do you work in a series?  Do you have any favorite characters or themes you like to re-visit?

Amanda:  I try to work in a series for a certain body of work but find I go back to add more paintings to this series later on, or inspired to create paintings that are similar for a future collection.  I have painted, 'Hares', 'Dreamy Landscapes', Tree People, Totem Animals, Fairy tales, Goddesses and the Greenman and I have many other ideas for my next body of work including paintings and illustrations for the astrology signs and artwork for future books.

MBS:  How long does it take you to complete a piece?  Do you work on more then one painting at a time?

Amanda: If they are small paintings, I tend to work on three at one time, especially if they are similar in colour.  I suppose one of these may take around six to eight hours, sometimes more.  Larger paintings on canvas can take up to one month or so and I work on one of these at a time. The larger the painting is, the more I need to concentrate and become absorbed by the creative process. This is a kind of meditation to me.

Shaman Flight

MBS:  What are you currently working on?

Amanda:  I'm currently working on new paintings for art galleries and collectors. These are a mix of the Dreamy Landscapes and a new series of Tree People that I will soon have limited edition giclee prints made.  After the Spring this year, I will be starting to paint new Fairy Tale illustrations.  When I'm trying to find fairytales to paint, I will re-read them until I find twelve that really resonate with me at the time. Inspiration, I believe comes from the heart not the mind. I'm sure when artist's speak of their muse it is when their hearts are open to receive inspiration and time alone, walks in nature or a walk on a beach somewhere, clears away the blocks to the muse.

I have a short tale I have been writing and illustrating. I can't say too much about it yet.  If you have ever been to the UK and visited Yorkshire, there you will find a beautiful and mystical harbour called Whitby. There have been many strange and wonderful stories about Whitby but not yet a fairy tale. I will make this story a handmade book to order for collectors.

MBS:  No, I haven't visited the UK (yet) - but I am always so intrigued by the depth of historic and
mystical lore that seems to inspire so many artists and writers who live there, and I'm always trying to find out from artists who I talk to and interview, what they attribute that to.  What are some of your thoughts?

Amanda: For me, the ancient history of the UK holds so much for mystery and magic. There are legends and myths that run deep into the history where people lived inland and by the coast.   The UK and Ireland are surrounded by the sea, they are both quite small Islands really.   Legends that are well known to everyone are those surrounding King Arthur. Merlin, Lady of the Lake and mythical beasts like Dragons. So many writers have their own fantastic tales but my favorites are 'Tolkin's  and C.S.Lewis.. Both of these creative writers had incredible insight into the land and legends and I'm sure walked through portals to bring back tales of mystery and magic.  Some would say that these stories were based on 'Christian beliefs, but even these were from more ancient ways that were taken from us long ago and changed into another way.  In the West, Druids and sacred places survived more than anywhere else on these Islands and are now still held strong and the pagan ways, including shamans, still celebrate at festivals throughout the year and live  a sacred life connected to nature.

Stories and tales of mystical creatures such as, Elves and the Fae come to mind and you can feel an energy in mossy woodlands and the moors of the UK and Ireland.  Goose bumps and tingles run up the back of my neck sometimes while walking in my favorite places.  Granite stones, Tors and other ancient sights like 'Stone Henge' are sometimes said to be like portals into another world. Even the 'Old English Secret Gardens' with their roses and herbs boarders hold an energy of another world.

I feel all of these things are in my blood and while I'm in the natural world I can sense the energy and feel the magic of it all.  Maybe it's creative people that are sensitive to this way of being, and all over the world in other ancient sacred places . It remains a mystery to me.

Autumn Equinox

MBS:  What is a typical work day like for you?  

Amanda:  My typical working day? I'm not sure I have one of these, every day is so different and painting doesn't feel like work, it feels like play. My partner, Nolan, and I home school our children too, so I suppose I mostly paint in the evenings.  In the Spring and Summer I love to paint until the early hours of the morning and then go for my 'dawn walks'.  It's great that both Nolan and I work from home because then we can be very flexible to who and when we teach our children. This opens up all sort of wonderful opportunities each day.

Moon Dream

MBS:  I see that you sell your work online.  How has the online experience been for you? 

Amanda: I sell mostly prints and greeting cards online from my etsy shop and website. This seems to work well.  The first year on etsy was slow to get started but I prefer to be painting and and spending time in nature and beautiful landscapes where I get my inspiration, than on a computer.  I have requests for commissions of original paintings from my facebook page and seem to have quite a following these days.  This always takes time to build up but is worth planning for because you meet some incredible  people and other artists and writers.  Of line, I have art galleries and shows I'm busy with and always busy painting for these.

MBS: Any advice for those who (seriously) wish to pursue an artistic path?
 

Amanda: Have patience and just do what you can. In time your creativity will shine through and your work will get noticed.  Most important of all is to follow your heart and dreams then everything is possible and before you know it, you are selling your art to collectors.  Have faith in what you do.

When Did You Meet? Attraction and the Zodiac's Chart Zones

It's Valentine's Day - love is in the air, and this is probably one of the most popular times of the year for anything having to do with astrology and horoscopes.

In a recent article in Dell Horoscope magazine titled Cosmic Chemistry; The Zodiac's Laws of Attraction, author Sioux Rose reminds us that a person's relationship with their significant other is not only impacted by whether the individual signs are compatible, but also what  Zodiac sign was present when they first met.  In other words, if the couple meets in Taurus, the energy expressed will be quite different then if they would have bonded in Virgo.

 I honestly had to go back and think about that one for myself - when did I meet my husband?  But when I finally remembered and checked with the information in the article, I was pretty surprised how accurate the author was about the nature of the union.

Below are some excerpts from the article.  For more in depth information I suggest you pick up a copy of the April issue of Dell Magazine for yourself.  While it is always wisest to consult the personal astrology chart as a whole, the way couples bond during the influence of specific signs is very interesting, and can certainly cast a new light upon relationships and how they function during this lifetime.

- When Aries (March 19/20 to April 19/20) is the cosmic zone where the Sun and Moon or Venus and Mars unite, the couple will be blessed with the gift of innocence.  There is a child-like innocence to the way Aries approaches the world and everything in it. The karmic challenge here is what is inherent in the fire itself (Aries is a fire sign).  Fire can fuel or it can destroy.

- When Sun and Moon or Venus and Mars meet in Taurus (April 19/20 to May 20/21), the magnetic power of Mother Earth Blesses the union.  The Moon is exalted in Taurus, so that means there is an inherent stability built into the bond and it is not unusual to find couples working together or in business partnerships.  The two challenges that stand out in this cosmic bond are stubbornness (Taurus the Bull) and also overindulgence of sensual pleasures...such as over eating and partying too much.

- When the pair meets in Gemini (May 20/21 to June 20/21), there is never a dull moment.  Gemini is an air sign, and the couple will most likely find themselves on the move involved in all kinds of activities and social events. They will be interested and involved in many things during their lifetime.  This is a bond that thrives in a busy household.  The challenge in this relationship is to make sure that the individuals do not over compartmentalize themselves to the point that the work or social persona does not develop too differently from the private or personal self.  An example of this is the politician or business person who espouse values of one type, then act in a completely opposite way in their private life.

-  Attitude and emotions characterize a bond formed in Cancer (June 20/21 to July 22).  The dynamics of each person's natal chart come in to play (particularly aspects to the Moon), and according to the birth blueprint it will either activate or agitate the union.  Couples whose planets come together in Cancer need homes that are free of discord and a place where they can experience a shared state of security.  If too much stress is encountered inside the residence, it could lead to psychological or medical problems in one partner or both.


- When a couple meets under Leo ( July 22 to August 22/23), life becomes the great romance.  It may also become the "great comedy" or tragedy.  The dramatic plays a huge role for the Leo, and as with most things, and "All the World's a Stage".  The sign of Leo is about great creativity, so a union under this category also has the potential to catalyze many joint creative projects and ventures.  This sign also understands the hearts of children so any fusion centered in Leo should see children factor substantially into their lives.  Leo's tie to the Sun inclines those who hold this signature to spread the light of higher understanding.  Pride is the element that can work against it.

- A fusion focused within Virgo (August 22/23 to September 22/23) is apt to focus the couple on healing and therapy.  They want to help people live a better life and most likely will become involved with professions, interests or studies that reflect this.  Virgo is also a very work oriented sign.  They also take their work home with them as a result of their constant need for perfection.  Virgo's inferior mandate for order, added to the urge to fix, edit, clean organize or clear away, is always operating.  That makes it difficult for a couple to relax.  The key to this relationship is to turn recreation into a task, and Virgo will enjoy it.  A couple under this union could also be given to criticism, emphasizing each other's small flaws instead of enjoying the positive side of the relationship.

- Libra (September 22/23 to October 22/23) is the sign that is assigned to the realm of marriage, and it's a wonderful time for a couple to meet each other.  Libra is all about balance, and no other sign is as partnership oriented or more given to the needs of it's partner then Libra.  The most common liability from this union could spring from indecisiveness.  Libra also represents neutrality, so these couples often see the logic on both side of the question, and could become non active on issues as a result.  In other words, noting gets done.

- Scorpio (October 22/23 to November 21/22) is the sign of alchemy and transformation, and a fusion within this sign would result with a deep bonding experienced between partners, both physically and/or spiritually.  It is also the sign associated with regeneration and rejuvenation and couples who connect through Scorpio's Alchemy may also find this a theme throughout many varying aspects of their lives.  There is no sign that holds the lessons of forgiveness higher on it's karmic roster then Scorpio.  Depending on other aspects of the individual charts, Scorpio's retaliatory stinging tail could also cause major afflictions to those who meet under this zone.

- The Sagittarius (November 21/22 to December 21) fusion zone is full of optimism, hope, and a joyous sense of life's wonders and possibilities.  It is also the sign connected to the worlds of religion, academe and publishing...and couples who meet meet during this time may often find themselves connected within those areas.  Sagittarius is also a mutable sign, and mutable signs carry the karmic signature of inner division. Temperaments may ride high with exuberance, but they can also crash with dark moments of despair.  In other words, a rocky road of emotions may be the case with a couple who meets under this influence.

-  Capricorn (December 21 to January 19/20) is the sign directly ruled by Saturn, the zodiac's lord of karma, and any bond formed under this fusion is apt to be karmic, satisfying commitments and promises that were made in previous lifetimes.  It may also involve restrictions on one or both partner's lives.  The Capricorn fusion can be thought of as boot camp.  One or both partners may be strict in nature, or one partner could exert more control over the other.  The pair is also apt to focus particular goals, often professional, and their lives will serve to further those objectives.  If the other planets are supporting, this pair will often bond for life and the root that is planted will grow and prosper over their lifetime.   If both partners support each others goals, they could rise quite high in their respective careers and their relationship will have a very solid, enduring lifetime commitment.

- The Aquarian (January 19/20 to February 18) fusion zone produces enormous electricity.  This is the pair that everyone wants on their party guest list!  They can illuminate the room with their natural charisma, no sign is more gregarious.  What can happen under this influence though, is that both partners could become so popular that they have to schedule time just to be together and enjoy each others company.  Also one of the pair could shine more brightly then the other, be even more popular, and that could cause issues in the relationship too.
  
 - Pisces (February 18 to March 19/20) is the last in the Zodiac, and this is where circle meets itself.  It is the sign of dreamers, and although hopes and dreams might be easier to launch from this zone, it's important that at least one of the partners be well grounded or both people will be caught up in an over sensitive, overt imaginative state of being.  The Pisces fusion zone unleashes a full spectrum of emotions, and among them the seductive allure of illusion.  Should one partner become swept up in into a pattern of addiction or escapist behavior, they may try to find a way to hide it.

2013 Year of The Water Snake

Scholars consider Chinese astrology to be one of the world's oldest forms of Astrology.  Unlike the other Moon-school traditions; Tibetan, Vedic and Judaic, which are couched in religion,
Chinese astrology is purely secular, a direction shared by Sun-school astrologies (Western and Arabian).

Ming Shu (Circle of Animals), is just one form of Chinese astrology, but it seems to be the one that is most commonly recognized by westerners.  This system is what Sun signs are to Western astrology, meaning, you only have to know the year of your birth to create a general personality profile.  Like all of the world's major astrological traditions however, a person's time, date and place of birth are essential to create an accurate, true birth chart.

2013 is the year of the water Snake (She), and people born between February 14, 1953 and February 2, 1954 are members of the Water Snake Zodiac Sign.

Although there are general behavioral patterns associated with the Snake (She) sign, the delineation is further augmented according to which element (earth, metal, fire, water, wood) happens to be in control the year that you are born.  For example, the personality of a fire snake is very different from that of a wood snake etc.  So, just because you are a Snake (She) in Chinese astrology does not mean that this is your year.

In general, snake is a symbol of wealth.  A snake person is stable and a good organizer, possessing substantial wisdom.  This person is highly intelligent and can occasionally be accused of having an overly moral outlook.  The person listens carefully to the advice of other people, but can be a poor sport, incapable of losing gracefully.  The snake individual  may know how to establish a relationship, but finds it difficult to maintain one.

The water snake has remarkable charisma.  Shrewd and materialistic, this person is very talented at handling finances.  They can also maintain a grudge for a long period of time.
